Ron Louque was born and raised in the Bayou Country of south Louisiana where his first art form was taxidermy. Beginning at age nine, and for the next ten years the young naturalist mounted hundreds of specimens, and in the process, he was gaining a vital knowledge of animal anatomy and behavior that would prove invaluable later in his life as a wildlife artist.
After enrolling as a student at L.S.U., Ron soon discovered the Museum of Natural History on campus, and it was there that his life’s work would be discovered … the art of painting birds. Louque had no thought of becoming an artist until he met a graduate ornithology student and bird illustrator by the name of John O’Neill who kindly permitted him to observe as he painted anatomically correct birds for field guides. It is there that Louque’s intricate knowledge of bird painting began. After two years of painting in his spare time as a zoology student, Ron decided to pursue art on a full-time basis. He has earned his living solely as a free lance fine artist to this day, selling over 106,000 reproductions and over 600 original paintings.
Louque is not an artsy artist, but approaches painting from a scientific standpoint, so he paints his subjects with accuracy and realism to the best of his ability. He is not interested in inserting brush strokes into a painting, but paints nature with fidelity to honor the Almighty Creator.
The artist’s port folio now spans a wide variety of subjects and painting media. They include birds, mammals, still life, landscape and figurative. His painting media are acrylic on board, primarily for smoothly detailed bird and stamp paintings, and oil on canvas or board for traditional landscapes, still life and figurative works. He paints with the highest degree of refinement, painting flawlessly with no visible brushstrokes, especially on his small stamp paintings. He often spends months on a single work, where most of the time spent is devoted to research and preliminary compositional studies.
Louque is nationally known in the field of conservation stamp painting, having 34 stamps to his credit. His paintings have helped raise millions of dollars for national wildlife refuge habitat conservation. His work has been endorsed by the National Wildlife Federation, The National Audubon Society, Ducks Unlimited, and numerous State Wildlife Agencies across the U.S. He is also endorsed by the U.S. Department of the Interior following his winning the coveted Federal Duck Stamp Art Competition, the most prestigious wildfowl art competition in the world. Louque’s knowledge of waterfowl, which has been acquired through taxidermy and countless hours in field studies over many years, has aided him greatly in his painting achievements. The artist is in awe of God’s magnificent creation of the earth and its life forms, and honors Him through his truthful paintings of nature.
